In many arid regions of the world, the scarcity of water is getting worse. At the same time, these areas often do not have the infrastructure for a continuous supply of drinking water. However, where there is sunshine and industrial waste heat in abundant supply, local seawater and brackish water desalination opens the door to securing the drinking water supply independently and in the long term.
When the site determines the solution
The individual requirements often result from the local conditions. For example, the lack of a mains connection, an inconsistent energy supply, sites that are difficult to access, a shortage of skilled workers, or poor profitability often make self-sufficient and thus off-mains drinking water desalination plants necessary. At the same time, chemicals should largely be avoided and the maintenance workload should be kept low. Discontinuous operation – for example due to fluctuations in solar irradiation or in the availability of waste heat – must also be possible.
Sustainable desalination with Terrawater HDH
Our Terrawater HDH (humidification-dehumidification) desalination system is designed and engineered specifically for these requirements. It is based on the natural principle of evaporation. The key advantage it offers is that it uses low-temperature waste heat from nearby processes, for example waste heat from an engine, or solar thermal energy for the desalination. Since energy costs are often the largest individual cost item in desalination, this advantage is particularly evident when it comes to operating costs. Terrawater HDH also does without the additional chemicals for preventing scaling that are otherwise required in desalination. This creates a decisive environmental advantage over conventional desalination methods. The system is robustly designed and engineered and is easy to operate thanks to the absence of vacuum technology. At the same time, the operational and maintenance workload remains low. The system can be set up as a mobile or stationary unit and can be flexibly adapted to changing operating conditions.
