Increasing the reliability of water systems for hydrogen processes

The hydrogen industry is growing rapidly worldwide. Electrolysis processes, new plant concepts, and industrial ramp-up place high demands on process stability, efficiency, and operational reliability. At the same time, water-based systems must be scalable – both at the water supply stage and on the wastewater side. The production of high-purity water, stable circuits, and the responsible disposal of concentrated wastewater – including zero liquid discharge (ZLD) processing – are crucial prerequisites for a reliable end-to-end process. At the same time, water quality and controlled heat transfer influence the feasibility and efficiency of electrolysis processes. Water for hydrogen: a profitable business case?

Sample calculation

Roughly 9 kg of high-purity water are required in order to produce around 1 kg of hydrogen. Water is therefore a key resource in hydrogen production alongside electrical energy. This raises the following key questions: 

  • Which water sources should or may be used? 
  • Which chemical additives are required for treating the water, and can they be discharged into the sea in offshore applications? 
  • What concentrated wastewater streams (brine) are produced in onshore electrolysis, and who is responsible for treating them?
